Nearly everyone could use extra money at some point in time, but did you know that you might literally be holding a treasure in your spare change? While you may not find some of these high-value U.S. coins hiding in your couch, you might discover pocket change that amounts to more than enough for a coffee run or lunch. Check out these valuable United States coins that may be hiding in plain sight in your home.
Wisconsin State Quarters
Do you have a 2004 Wisconsin quarter in your pocket? If so, you may be surprised to learn that an extra leaf on this relatively easy-to-find variation could net you hundreds of dollars. The lower left-hand side of the reverse side of the quarter includes an extra leaf on the ear of corn. The two different varieties include a low leaf and a high leaf, and the additional leaves are very visible on the coin.
Double-Die Pennies
Question: When is a penny not worth a single cent? When it’s worth between 20 – 50 dollars, that’s when! If you’re lucky enough to have this relatively recent penny with a pretty big glitch, you’re holding a coin with much greater than the face value. Check your 1995, 1969 and 1972 pennies for a “double strike” from the die. This is most visible on the words ‘Liberty” and “In God We Trust.” The strike will look a bit blurry, and the older coins are even more valuable than the 1995 version.
‘In God We Rust’ Quarters
You never know what’s going to happen at one of the United States mint locations, and this Kansas state quarter that shows ‘In God We (T)Rust’ proves that statement. The ‘t’ didn’t strike cleanly during the die process, leaving what may look like a political statement (but was really caused by grease on the die). These quarters can be worth up to $100, making it a nice find if you happen upon one of these beauties.
Lincoln Pennies Worth Over $100,000
Yes, you read that correctly! This tiny coin is one of over 430 million that were struck, but a particular zinc-coated steel penny featuring President Lincoln sold in 2007 for $115,000. What makes this particular coin so special? The steel planchets on which it was struck were only used in 1943. Finding a version of this coin in pristine condition is unlikely to happen again — but you never know!
