Famous Mints Around the World

Famous Mints Around the World

Mints are the places that produce the physical money (coin and paper) that we use every day. Each type of global currency has its own mint, so there are hundreds of them around the world. Each mint has its own qualities and attributes that make it unique. Here’s a look at some of the most incredible mints around the world and what makes them stand out from all the rest.

Austrian Mint

Up until 2002, when the Euro was introduced, the Austrian Mint produced only Austrian schilling coins. These days, the mint produces Austrian versions of the Euro coins, which can be used anywhere in the Eurozone, not just in Austria. It also creates a variety of commemorative coins geared towards coin collectors. Though there are other, smaller mints throughout Austria, this primary mint is responsible for the bulk of coin production in the country.

Bavarian State Mint

The Bavarian State Mint was Germany’s first mint, even before it officially became its own country. During the Austrian occupation of the region in the early 1700s, the mint produced Austrian coins. When the Olympic Games were held in Munich in 1972, the mint even produced the medals that the winners were awarded. In 1999, the mint was responsible for producing the first Euro coins when this new currency was introduced, and it still produces them today.

La Casa de Moneda is Mexico's primary mint, and it is the oldest mint in all of North and South America. The silver Mexican peso coins produced at this mint back in its earliest days formed the foundation of many of the modern currencies we see today, including the American dollar, the Chinese yuan and the Japanese yen.

La Monnaie de Paris

Paris’ mint has been turning precious metals into coins for more than 1,150 years. Its skilled artisans are known for their high-quality metal work, creating beautiful designs that are sought out by the world over. This mint produces both circulation and collectible coins, as well as medallions and other decorative items.
