Did you know that the Constitution and the Coinage Act of 1792 made gold and silver the only form of lawful money in the United States? But from 1933 to 1974, you faced a decade in prison if caught with gold money in your pocket (unless you were a dentist, in which case you could own 100 ounces). It seems unbelievable, doesn’t it? Yet, in 1933, the newly-elected president, Franklin Roosevelt, nationalized gold, declaring by executive order that owning gold would henceforth be illegal. The Long and Fascinating History of the Dahlonega Mint

For numismatists, few things are more fascinating than learning the story of coins that are in their collection — except maybe learning the history of an area branch of the U.S. Mint. The Dahlonega Mint was first established in 1835 and was one of three mints chartered that year, all located in the south, and was created for the coinage of gold only. The other two mints were added in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Charlotte, North Carolina, with only New Orleans getting the addition of silver coins to its lineup.
